I had a similar experience as Chooch at the Borders Bookstore in West L.A. when Wigged Out was released. Randy did a record promotion in the store, and I arrived as Vinnie was setting up. It happened to be my first time seeing Vinnie in person, other than a Sting concert. He flew around his kit for about 20 to 25 minuets and it took every bit of me to keep my composure. My face hurt from smiling so big for so long! I did not even notice that Randy was sitting right next to me the whole time. He looked at me once he stopped playing and said, “The Kid can beat the shit out of those drums”! Then Randy got up and just started hammering away at the keys with Vinnie comping over the top. After they finished Vinnie walked up to my buddy and me and asked for a smoke. We sat and chatted for about a half hour. It was a great first impression to say the least!

Chooch!! Great review!!

Ya...... when me, pocket & drum4fun were waiting to get in, I heard the blowing through the door and on your cel phone!! LOL!!

Funny.... I had a similar experience when I 1st got to meet him at the Bromberg recording session. I think if you treat him with the same respect you would any one of your friends, he'd be more apt to wanting to get to know you.

I love what you wrote here........
"For me, vinnie?s playing grabs both my heart and my cognitive side. He just has an angle of interpretation to music that even when busy sounds simple and clear because there?s still an idea / statement that my heart can latch onto. It?s never an off the rack lick with him. It?s always in the moment, reactive and honest."

I think I'll send this to Vinnie. I'm sure he'd appreciate your words.

HOD rocks!!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Thanks, but I wouldn't dream of it, man! Every time I see that Dr. Pepper stain the size of Rhode Island on my best beige Dockers I'll remember that quip. You sum up volumes in a single perfectly distilled remark the way Davey Tough could place a strategic accent out of nowhere to propel a soloist into the heavens.

Not even T-Bo can make me laugh that hard.

Hi guys,
up until now I only read the posts , but never posted anything. Well, after reading all the posts about the Waldman-gig I thought I should start to post something as well.
Ralph Humphrey told me on Wednesday that Vinnie was playing that night and after 1 hour of research I found out where he played.
The show was amazing, I was very curious to hear Vinnie on just a 4 piece-kit. It sounded amazing and I don't think ANYONE could play that stuff better than these 4 guys did. Just try to play the charts in the "Unreel Drum book" , WITHOUT the 'Vinnie stuff'.
I think it's sad that it even had to come up , that they were MAYBE not as tight as the could have been and I could have bet 1,000,000 $ that someone would post "Vinnnie lost his drumsticks" . WHY is that SOO worth mentioning?! It is just a sign that he plays unbelievably relaxed, even though he plays with this amazing speed. Every time I go to see Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta or someone in that league play live, I have the feeling a lot of the people just wait for the moment, that someone makes a mistakes or looses a stick etc. .
And then when I hear people talk after the gig or in between the shows like they would know excactly what the guys just did ( which I am sure 90% they don't), and try to stalk the musicians and take pictures and take autographs and all of that stuff, when the musicians probably just want to relax a little and take a breather... I just want to get out of there...
Why can't we JUST appreciate their amazing talent and not point to the TINY mistakes they might have made.
Well, maybe this post is a little bit harsh, but I was just a little upset after I read SOME of the posts. I know most of the guys who posted only wrote how amzing that show was, but why can all the posts be like that? Please don't think I am an a@#$hole , I hope someone is replying to my post and maybe puts my way of seeing things right again. :-)
Well, that's it for right now. Keep on practicing!
Thanks,
Oddtime

WARNING: this is going to be a long post ? was the best I could do to keep it short! 

Hey guys, it was great meeting most of ya! Pocket, great to finally have met ya as well as dsop, mark morales (dude, haven?t seen you in years), brady, tim, shed always a pleasure.

What a privilege it was to see vinnie with such great musicians and with all of you. I rarely get to go to these hangs so it was great! Danny, so bummed you weren?t there! Feel better, dude!
Lemme give ya guys a slightly different perspective of that night if I may. I was in Burbank and took off to the restaurant at around 6pm. (tangiers is across the street from ?the derby?. Los Feliz area. Just in case they play there again.) I thought I was running late! So after getting there around 6:30 and finding parking around the neighborhood (what a miracle), I hurried into the restaurant. I noticed it was half empty. So I quickly ask the bus boy where?s the band? He points me to another door. I rush in. all I see are empty tables with reserved signs on them. Randy?s there working on some tunes w/ mike o?niel, the guitarist. I find a barstool next to the bar as close to the stage as I can get. I see pieces of vinnie?s kit laying on stage. (he didn?t use all of them that night) he actually brought 2 racks and 2 flrs, but the space that he was in didn?t allow for him to use all his drums. I hear grunting and footsteps and in comes vinnie with his music stand, some hardware. The guys are like are you sure you don?t need help? He?s like I?m alright or something to that effect. He goes back and brings his cymbals and kick. I offered to help, but he thankfully said no. can ya blame him?

Vinnie after debating the small space allotted to him, decides to just use his (what looked like) 10x5 rack tom, 18x16 kick and 14x12 flr tom. I thought perhaps this was his signature series hip gig kit or something that I didn?t know about. I realize at this point that he?s also going to use only his 20?ride and his 18? crash. They both looked like K?s. in fact I believe they all were including his hats.

So, in front of what seemed like 5-6 people, he proceeds to warm up. I learned that night that when vinnie warms up, it?s not a warm up. It?s a full on blow. I mean the guys was just going off on a clinic! He must?ve been like 5 yards from where I was sitting. He?d go off for about 15 minutes then say to me, ?this is basically my whole repertoire!? and I?m like ?coulda fooled me!? as I laugh. Hed go on again for like another 20 minutes and tells me ?man I haven?t used this kit in a while, man!? so I banter something back laughing. After getting his fill of warmup he walk towards me to introduce himself to me. Hey I?m vinnie, I?m like, ?h h hi, I?m chuck. He asks me curiously ?how?d you get in here so early? Did you sneak through the back, or sumthin??? I straight out tell him that I just walked to the front of the restaurant and the bus boy directed me to this room. He?s like ?oh, ok.? Then asks me where the bathroom is and goes off. By then, tim, and shedder showed up. We got to see some more ?warmups? as as well as short rehearsal before people were allowed in.

To be a fly on a wall while these guys rehearsed as well as seeing vinnie banter back and forth with the other cats was really cool. It?s like he?s someone?s uncle next door. You would never suspect that he?s a musical genius. I gather that he?s the most comfortable around people who just treats him like an average joe. That in itself was a treat. The music as you can read on these posts was great! Danny, I totally agree with you it?s great hearing these cats and vinnie even when they don?t necessarily hit it perfect. Heck he even droped his stick at the end of a fill that ends the tune and yet, it sounded great! For me, vinnie?s playing grabs both my heart and my cognitive side. He just has an angle of interpretation to music that even when busy sounds simple and clear because there?s still an idea / statement that my heart can latch onto. It?s never an off the rack lick with him. It?s always in the moment, reactive and honest.

On a side note, drumaddict ? that stand light was my stand light. Vinnie couldn?t see after they dimmed down the house lights so I ran off and got what was available in my car I wish I had a better solution but what?re ya goin to do eh? I?m sorry I didn?t get to meet ya.  perhaps some other hang?

Thanks again, john for the heads up. You are a blessing. Dude, so how was it like going up to the mountain and sitting with moses? I thought it was funny how vinnie asked you if you brought your video camera as he hit the stage. hahahha! Mark, I?m so happy for ya. You?ve been following vinnie?s career for something like 27 years, you say? For me, Christmas has come early and this is definitely a fine capper for this year. HOD rocks!!
